The Cheapest Way to Buy Data in Ghana

How to pay less for data in Ghana: compare price per gigabyte across MTN, AirtelTigo and Telecel, avoid shop mark-ups, and stop wasting bundles you never finish.

Updated 23 August 2026

Most people in Ghana overpay for data without realising it — not by a lot each time, but every single week. Here is where the money leaks and how to stop it.

1. Compare price per gigabyte, not price per bundle

A GHS 5 bundle is not automatically cheaper than a GHS 20 one. Divide the price by the gigabytes and compare that number. Larger bundles nearly always win.

2. Buy at reseller rates instead of shop rates

Every roadside vendor adds a margin. Buying through a reseller platform gives you the underlying rate — and if you buy often, you can register as a reseller yourself and pay that rate permanently while charging others.

3. Stop buying bundles you cannot finish

An unfinished bundle is money burnt. Check your average usage before choosing a size:

Typical useRough monthly data
WhatsApp, calls, light browsing2–4 GB
Social media and daily browsing6–10 GB
Regular video streaming20 GB and up

Match the bundle to your real usage, not your optimistic usage.

4. Control what eats data in the background

  • Turn off automatic app updates over mobile data.
  • Stop cloud photo backup from running on data.
  • Set video apps to a lower default quality.
  • Download music and shows on Wi-Fi where you can.

These four settings alone routinely cut a monthly bill by a third.

5. Buy at any hour instead of when a shop is open

Emergency top-ups from whoever is nearby at 11pm are always the most expensive data you will ever buy. Buying online at any hour removes the premium entirely.

6. Turn your own data spend into income

If you are already the person friends call when they need data, charge for it. Set your prices, share your link, and the margin becomes yours.
